This made me laugh yesterday when I dropped my son off at school. As many of you know my son Sean is 8 years old and at that age when he thinks he rules the house!
When Sean got out of the car to meet up with his schoolfriends one of them said to him “I wish my daddy didn’t work and took me to school” to which my son replied I think my dad does work -”Do you daddy?”
We then had a discussion about it last night when I sat my son down and actually showed him what work looked like for me. He finally got the fact that just because I don’t leave the house for days on end as I used to, that I actually do still work. He loves the fact that I drop him at school, pick him up from school, attend sports days and attend any sort of school function that requires me to attend. I know that none of his friends dads are in that position.
It started me thinking about the great book by Robert Kiyosaki “Rich Dad Poor Dad” (if you’ve not read it, I really recommend it) and although Robert Kiyosaki was given great advice from an early age by his rich dad, I didn’t really think about discussing future plans with my son for some years yet. But when is the best time to plant seeds in one so young. Sean learns at such a fantastic rate that I’m now thinking NOW is the time. I know that as Sean grows older he will become more and more used to me being around and not working away or getting home very late at night due to long commutes , he may even think that is the natural thing for him to be working from home as he grows into a young adult.
As the economic situation worsens worldwide over the comming years and people are virtually fighting for what jobs there are, I want my son to realise that there is a wonderfull alternative – I hope he grabs it with both hands

Many small business owners and entrepreneurs are discouraged by people close to them when they are about to embark on something that has the ability to be life changing. Most people mean no harm and have your best interests at heart (or so they think) when they say things to you like “it’s too risky”, “you need a real job”, “you need the security” etc etc etc…
My view is that if you don’t follow your dream, you don’t know what might have been! Indeed many relationships & families have broken up all over the world due to a lack of understanding of how important following your dream can be.
Another key thing that stops small business owners & entrepreneurs from following their dream is the thought of failure and proving that people were right to tell you not to do it!
But most people don’t understand that failing can actually bring you closer to success if you let it. Embracing failure can be difficult but it can also empowering. What is the worst case scenario if you fail? – Failure forces you to face your errors, shortcomings, fears, all of which are required for personal growth.
Have no doubt your business is going to be a huge success, but you will certainly face some failures along the way. How successful you become will depend on how you deal with those failures, learn from them, what will you do differently next time?
If you need some help to overcome your fear of failure, read some of the books from industry leaders and you will be amazed at how many of them failed big time first time round. A great book is “Rich Dad Poor Dad” by Robert Kiyosaki.
In this book you will hear the all to familiar story of someone being told that you need to get the secure job & paycheck and on the other hand being given excellent business advice by a very successful entrepreneur. Indeed Robert Kiyosaki is a great example of someone who failed many times, learned from his mistakes and is now a very wealthy man with a successful world wide business.
So as I said at the start – don’t fear failure, embrace it and remember -
“If you don’t follow your dream, you don’t know what might have been!”
In todays fast paced world full of modern technology more and more people have opted to work from home instead of what you would consider the “normal”workplace. This started to take off more and more in the corporate world several years ago where people would spend a day a week working from home because they felt they would be more productive due to lack of disturbance from other colleagues. Lap top commputers and high speed mobile broadband now mean that people can work virtually anywhere, anytime!
Many others started their own internet business others as writers, data processors, article writers – the list is endless.
Why is this?
Because the benefits of working from home are abundant and many of them are health related, some of which you might not even be aware of. If like me you had to spend 3 nights every week in hotels, you are more likely to eat food that is convenient rather than good for you. Lunch (if I had one) was a quick snack on the go and then I would wonder why I had a sore stomach!! Working from home you can stop when you want and eat something really healthy that will help your body, thus making you more productive.
Today, one of the biggest problems in the workplace is without doubt stress. The damage that stress can do to you as an individual is immense with various physical and psychological effects on the body – none of which are good!
For me it was always the busy schedule with back to back meetings all day and deadlines to achieve, nine hour days and then the commute. I seemed to spend my life in the car.
These stresses can have a serious negative impact on your health. Stress can lead to high blood pressure, difficulty sleeping or relaxing, loss of appetite or poor diet, irratibility, anger outbursts and depression – to name but a few. More importantly it can have a major impact with your loved ones at home!!
Working at home relieves a multitude of stresses. You can break whenever you feel like it, spend time with your spouse and kids and when you are working your in the comfort of your own home in a peaceful environment.
There is no commute. There is no need to get up early unless it’s what you choose and there is no getting home late in the evening when the kids are in bed and no staying away in hotels!! You work when you want – how good is that?
Working at home has other health benefits. When working in a regular job, you are exposed to all kinds of germs & bacteria. How many times have you had a colleague coughing and spluttering all over the place next to you. They don’t want to take time off sick so they come in spread what they have with you!
Or other people who may be less let’s say hygenic than you using your phone or desk. You then get sick, take time off work and bring your illness home with you, or you struggle on regardless. When working at home you are less exposed to these problems meaning that you can maintain a much healthier you and if you do get ill and want to carry on working, then you can in bed!
Another major benefit is that you can fit in excercise more easily and we all know that keeps the body healthy. You can excercise, shower and be back at work quicker than you could normally commute to your work in the morning. Or you could take 15 mins to meditate each day (I’m a big fan) this is an excellent way to reboost the body for the day ahead. Household or family related chores can be done during breaks in the day meaning that you don’t have to do them at the weekend!
Contrary to popular thought and what many people have probably told you, working from home has more job security than a regular job. You don’t have to worry about someone uttering those two words to you – “Your fired”
You can also work on more than one business at a time increasing your income by as much as you want or need.
So you see all these things combined – healthy diet, excercise, no commute, no boss, more time with the family, doing something you enjoy, doing it your way and taking total control of your life, really is good for your health and well being.
A question I am asked on a regular basis is this – “Is making money online easy?”
The honest answer is yes and no. People really started making money online about 10 years ago, many are now muti millionaires but many more put more money into their business than they took out.
There are many ways to make money on the internet but there are also many ways to lose money.
We have many more advantages now than people had 10 years ago due to the major advances in technology – high speed broadband being the obvious example. Ten years ago it would take you hours to submit content and articles to websites, now it can be done in a matter of seconds.
One thing that has increased enormously from 10 years ago is the number of people who think that the internet offers some “get rich quick scheme”
If you search online for the term “make money online” you will probably find millions of entries, many of which are the “make $10,000 in 10 minutes” or “I earn $100,000 a week and only work 5 minutes a day” you know the sort of rubbish I mean. The problem is that many people are so desperate to find a solution to their problems that they think these statements are real and end up paying out cash for something that is just a dream and no more. The other problem with this is that some people don’t learn from their mistakes and keep jumping from opportunity to opportunity hoping that something is going to solve all their worries. That’s why 97% of people fail online. The rule that I’ve always used in business and in life is that if it sound too good to be true, it usually is.
Don’t get me wrong there are many good opportunities out there to run a successful online business, you just need to look carefully for them. Do your homework and research any business opportunity thoroughly, this will save you making any costly mistakes. Running a successful business from home is hugely rewarding. Get it right and reap the reward.
I’m sure that many of you have noticed the numbers of businesses that are closing down at the moment, the same businesses were flourishing a few years ago but as the recession really takes bite they have no option but to close their doors. It’s the same everywhere you go no matter what country your in the story is the same!
In 2010, it’s tough but admirable, to be a entrepreneur or small business owner. The challenge out there is huge and yet there are many out there having their most profitable year ever!
The truth is that these switched on people realised that both the rules & the game itself were changing and were ready for it. Here are some of the thoughts / tips/ ideas that I have picked up from those that are winning the battle in the current economy, these can be implemented immediately to ensure you stay ahead of the game -
BE A LEADER
It’s vital that you realise the difference between leading and managing. In the current climate you need to be proficient at both. Identify the values with which you operate your business and surround yourself with like minded people. You cannot afford to neglect any aspect of your business – to be a true champion in the current climate you need to run a tight ship.
KNOW YOUR WEAKNESSES
Many people fail in business because they try to wear to many hats. When it comes to running your business, you know where your strengths lie. Delegate or outsource where possible things that your not good at, leaving you free to focus on the areas that bring you most money. Time is precious – use it wisely.
HAVE A CLEAR PLAN & DIRECTION
You are an entrepreneur because you have a real passion and drive. These things alone will not make your business a success. You MUST have a clear business plan, covering your goals and the keys to your success. You need to know where you want to be and how your going to get there. Make sure you put the plan down on paper and then STICK to it!
All of the above are quite painless and easy to implement into your business now!
The current economic situation is bound to get worse before it starts to pick back up again, only the strongest and best prepared will survive..It’s over to you.
Having just moved home as you know I have set up my new home office ( with some additional room for my boy toys)
I have bought my third office chair and at last I have got it right. I can’t emphasise enough the importance of getting the right chair! I have a problem with my back that has resulted in damage to the bottom two disks causing me some serious pain! This has been a result of poor posture and sitting for long periods of time in a chair that was not fit for purpose. I’m receiving treatment for my back & it is on the mend and my new chair will ensure that I no longer put pressure on my back where it does most harm.
Anyone out there who is suffering from lower back pain when sitting i seriously recommend a “wedge”. This was recommended to me by a consultant and it made a huge difference to my comfort when sitting. It looks like a giant wedge of cheese and is made from foam. It costs £25 – $40 and will be the best money you will spend. It works by tilting forward your pelvis and takes the pressure off the bottom disks in your back. It has worked wonders for me!
Thought I would share my thoughts on this with you as it has had a big impact on my quaility of life and I know that there are many people out there with the same sort of problem. Hope it helps.
Starting as an internet marketer is not as easy as people think.
Firstly you have to learn how to do it and most of the people I have contact with had no idea how to do anything other than write an e-mail or surf the webb when they started – so there is a very steep learning curve for most.
But even when you have mastered some of the key skills required, you then have to deal & compete with the millions of other marketers who are out there perhaps selling and targetting the same customers as you..
That’s why “YOU INC” is so important. You need people to see you as an expert in your field. That will attract people to you.
Here are some of my key tips to help you with your online visibility & credibility
> Learn from others who have been there and are successful. You don’t have to reinvent the wheel. Learn from other peoples mistakes.
> Invest in yourself, buy products & services that will help you to eastablish your on line presence.
> Attend seminars & training courses that are related to the business area you want to be involved with. Do everything you can to meet top marketers face to face.
> Write articles, newsletters & blog updates to increase your credibility
> Make up your own logo & use your name in your domain name if possible again to gain visibility and credibility.
> Write e-books & allow them to be downloaded & redistributed viraly spreading your URL.
> Learn from master marketers. Take their advice and follow what they do to ensure your own success
Like I said many times before on these pages – add value & help others & your business (You Inc) will flourish
